Poverty reduction in Northwest, a priority

VGP – Hunger elimination and poverty reduction is an immediate task of the provinces in the Northwest as the rate of poor households in the region is 24.58%, even hitting 30% in some localities, much higher than the country’s 9.6% rate.

Addressing in the Steering Committee for the Northwest’s conference to summarize its first half performance and initiate the last half tasks, Deputy PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the 14 provinces in the Northwest still face a lot of challenges despite the achievements they attained in the first six months.

So far, 100% of the poor districts in the region have received financial support worth VND1,314 billion from enterprises, or 62% of the total amount committed for the fight against poverty. The funding was used for building residential houses for the poor, schools, medical centers, vocational training, and granting scholarship to students.

The whole region’s GDP grew 8.8%, 1.52% higher than the same period last year. Agricultural cultivating area covers nearly 518,000 ha, increased by 3.3%, giving a yield of 2.2 million tons of food, increased by 0.6% year on year./.
