Ties with S Korea get stronger

SEOUL (VNS) — Viet Nam and South Korea will work together towards a more effective bilateral partnership, the two sides agreed as Viet Nam's visiting National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung held talks with South Korean leaders in Seoul yesterday.
During the meeting with South Korean National Assembly speaker Kang Chang-hee, Hung and his counterpart agreed that the two assemblies should expand their co-operation and knowledge-sharing.
Enjoying a warm reception from the South Korean National Assembly and the Korean people, Hung expressed his delight at the rapid development of the strategic partnership between Viet Nam and South Korea.
"South Korea is not only the leading economic partner but is becoming a reliable friend," he said.
On this occasion, Hung affirmed Viet Nam's consistent stance on inexorably consolidating the strategic partnership with China.
He called for South Korea's support in organising the 132nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-132) scheduled for 2015.
For his part, Kang spoke highly of Viet Nam's socio-economic development as well as the country's improved role and position in the region and the world.
The enhancement of co-operative ties with Viet Nam has helped expand and develop relations between South Korea and other regional countries for peace, friendship and development, he said.
At the talks, the top legislators briefed each other on their National Assemblies' recent activities and agreed to increase co-operation in accelerating and supervising the implementation of agreements reached by the two Governments so that they can bring practical and effective results for both.
They also agreed to step up co-operation and work closely with each other at regional and international inter-parliamentary forums based on the spirit of mutual support and coordinated assistance on regional and global issues.
Following the talks, Hung and his South Korean counterpart inked an agreement on co-operation between the two NAs and witnessed the signing of a co-operative agreement between the Vietnamese NA Office and the South Korean NA Secretariat.
According to the signed agreement, the two legislative bodies will increase the exchange of delegations at all levels, as well as exchange their knowledge on issues of legislature, supervision and other related operations.
Meeting with Prime Minister Chung Hong-won the same day, the Vietnamese NA leader asked the South Korean Government to continue encouraging its businesses to increase investment in Viet Nam .
To reach US$30 billion in two-way trade by 2015, the two sides needed co-ordination in speeding up negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA), he said.
He highly valued South Korea's development assistance, saying that it made positive contributions to Viet Nam's socio-economic development. He asked the South Korean Government to continue considering Viet Nam a key partner in development co-operation and to prioritise and increase the official development assistance (ODA) for the Southeast Asian country, especially in regard to transportation infrastructure.
The Vietnamese NA leader suggested the two countries co-ordinate closely to solve arising problems in a timely fashion and to continue boosting their labour co-operation.
Chung hailed the Vietnamese leader's visit, saying that it played an important role in further raising the efficiency of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Affirming the South Korean's priority of maintaining and strengthening co-operation with Viet Nam, the PM suggested the two sides continue to expand their ties in order to tap the advantages offered by each side.
The two countries should intensify their exchange of delegations at every level, as well as to promote co-operation and investment between both countries' business sectors, he said.
Earlier, when receiving Choi Young-joo, President of the South Korea-Viet Nam Friendship Association, Hung asked the organisation to offer its assistance to married Vietnamese women living in South Korea so that they can find stable jobs, raise their income level and improve their lives, thus contributing to gender equality and a reduction in instances of domestic violence.
Meeting with leaders of the South Korea Telecom Corporation, Charmvit Group and Samsung Corporation, the Vietnamese NA leader praised the effectiveness of their business ventures and investments in Viet Nam, affirming that he and his government will actively work with their South Korean counterparts in order to create a favourable environment for investment and trade between companies from both countries.
During the visit, the Vietnamese delegation also visited the Korean Development Institute (KDI) and the Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIST).
In the evening, the South Korean NA Speaker, Kang Chang-hee, hosted a banquet for Chairman Hung and his entourage. — VNS
