The completion of the border demarcation between Vietnam and Laos will be celebrated in a ceremony that will be attended by Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his Lao counterpart Thongsing Thammavong on July 9.

The ceremony will be conducted at the border gate between the Vietnamese town of Thanh Thuy in Nghe An province and the Lao town of Nam On in Bolykhamsay province, where the last border marker on the Vietnam-Laos borderline will be planted at the event.

The completion of the planting of border markers is seen as a key component of the two countries’ cooperation for development.

Vietnam and Laos share a border line of 2,067 km which runs through 10 Vietnamese provinces: Dien Bien, Son La, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam and Kon Tum.

The line also passes 10 Lao provinces, including Phongsaly, Luang Prabang, Houaphan, Bolykhamsay, Khammoune, Savannakhet, Salavan, Xiengkhouang, Sepon and Attapeu.

In July 1977 the two countries signed a 10-year agreement on border demarcation and the two sides later planted 214 markers in 199 positions.

In 2003, it became clear that the old marker system was no longer suitable to meet the requirements, when the density of markers was too low. In addition the markers had degraded considerably.

Therefore, the two countries agreed to launch a project to restore and strengthen new border markers in the 2008-2014 period.

On September 5, 2008, the project officially started with the building of marker 605 at the Lao Bao-Densavan border gate.

In June 2013 the building was completed and at that time, the total number of border markers between Vietnam and Laos amounted to 835 in 793 positions.

The two countries have agreed that the new markers will improve border management, consolidate the security and defense of both nations, facilitate socio-economic development in border areas and create an environment of peace, friendship and cooperation along the borderline between Vietnam and Laos.

The two sides will adjust the border map and compile a new protocol on the borderline between the two countries.

In an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency in Vientiane on July 4, Lao Deputy Foreign Minister Bounkeut Sangsomsak said the land border marker planting reflects the special friendship and solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos.
