The fallow area rose 47.4 ha compared to the autumn crop in 2012 and 143 ha compared to the spring crop this year.

297 ha of agricultural land, equivalent to 0.47% of arable land throughout Hai Duong province, have been abandoned in the autumn crop this year, of which public land accounted for 99.6 ha, the rest was land allocated to households.

The fallow area rose 47.4 ha compared to the autumn crop in 2012 and 143 ha compared to the spring crop this year.

The situation of abandoning land occurred in 5,793 households in 86 communes. Some districts with a lot of fallow area were Chi Linh (almost 54 ha), Gia Loc (over 47 ha), and Tu Ky (nearly 44 ha). There were farmers making applications for returning fields in two districts of Thanh Mien and Kim Thanh.

The fallow area in the autumn crop was larger than that in the spring crop because of its lower productivity and susceptibility to flooding in low-lying fields.

To limit agricultural land abandonment, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has requested the Hai Duong provincial Party’s Committee and provincial People’s Committee:

- to direct land mergence, plot change, and large plot formation convenient for production mechanization, prevention and extermination of pestilent insect, harvesting, contributing to reducing production costs and raising farmers’ income;

- to invest in building roads and canals in remote fields, apply technical progress, and add new varieties to production;

- to allocate funds to support annual rice production under the project “Development of rice varieties and centralized commercial rice areas in Hai Duong province in the 2012 – 2015 period”;

- to protect and develop rice land pursuant to the Government’s Decree No. 42/2012/ND-CP on management and use of land for rice cultivation, etc.
