(VEN) – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide a US$410 million loan for Vietnam to build a second highway from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta and the southern coastal region.
The project will include 5km of two bridges and 26km of roads.
The new highway will reduce the travel duration between Ho Chi Minh City and Long Xuyen from 3.5 to 2.5 hours. It is scheduled for opening at the end of 2017 benefiting about 170,000 people and creating 400,000 jobs in the construction and production sectors.
Construction will cost US$860 million, including US$410 million in the ADB’s normal loan, US$160 million in the Australia International Development Agency’s grant aid, US$260 million in the Korea Export Import Bank’s loan, and US$56 million in the Vietnamese Government’s capital.
ADB Transport Specialist Rustam Ishenaliev said that Vietnam had a fast-growing and export-based economy and that the Mekong Delta was an economic engine as it is the third largest industrial center in Vietnam, contributing more than 60 percent of all agricultural and fish output. The transport project will pave the way for western provinces in the Mekong Delta to develop their economy and industries./.
