Twenty-five-year-old Tran Huu Hiep of the central province of Thanh Hoa, who died after rescuing five people in the motorboat accident in the Soai Rap River in HCM City on Friday last week that saw eight others drown, was posthumously presented a Brave Youth Badge on Thursday.


The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the Thanh Hoa Province Youth Union, and the Viet Nam National Oil and Gas Group called on his family to present the badge.

New investment to focus on industrial sectors


The Government has identified six industrial sectors that will be prioritised for investment to develop as key industries.


They are electronics, agricultural machinery, agricultural and seafood processing, shipbuilding, environment and energy saving, and automobile and automobile parts.


The Government targets the six sectors accounting for at least 35 per cent of industrial output by 2020, and having among the highest growth in labour productivity.

Some 29 per cent of children under 5 stunted


Around 29 per cent of the 7 million children under five in Viet Nam suffer from stunted growth caused by malnutrition, Nguyen Tran Bao Chi of the HCM City-based Hung Vuong Hosptial told a meeting held at the hospital on Thursday.


The National Nutrition Strategy targets to reduce this rate to 26 per cent by 2015 and 23 per cent by 2020, and encourages mothers to breast-feed their children.

Almost every city household to have tap water


In HCM City, 92 per cent of households will get tap water by 2015, Tran Dinh Phu, general director of the Sai Gon Water Corporation, said on Thursday.


To achieve the target, the company will build two more water pumping plants and lay and upgrade 1,300km of pipes at a cost of VND18.7 trillion (US$890 million). The waterworks are the Thu Duc Water Plant No3 and Tan Hiep Water Plant No.2.


As of the end of last year 87.3 per cent of the population, or 1.33 million households, had access to tap water.
