DTiNews, along with several other agencies in Can Tho City handed over 1,000 notebooks to 50 poor students in Co Do District on August 9.
The representative from the logistics board of Can Tho City granted notebooks for the students The students attend Thanh Phu 1 Secondary School and have also provided with 50 schoolbags and 150 pens.
Nguyen Thi Tham from Grade 7 A1 said, “My family has 10 children, but I can only study until the seventh grade. My parents, brothers and sisters are all rice farmers. Six of my brothers and sisters are married but they also have to work as hired labourers, like my parents. I’m just waiting for my parents to receive the money from the last harvest so we can buy my study supplies for this year.”
Thanh Phu Commune has an estimated 900 households living at or below the poverty line. Most of these families are forced to make a living by agricultural work or looking for odd jobs.
Le Thi Xuan Hien, Headmaster of Thanh Phu 1 Secondary School, said around 70 out of 400 students live in poverty. When harvest time comes many students have to drop their studies to help their families with manual labour.
While Vietnam is continuing its economic development, there are still many who have not benefited from the country’s economic successes. This is just one among many efforts by DTiNews and its affiliates to give back to the community. On the same day our team visited 37 poverty-stricken households in Thanh Phu Commune, providing them with valid health insurance cards worth a total of VND7 million (USD333.3).
