Data announced by the General Statistics Office (GSO) on Tuesday showed that nine out of 11 groups of goods have seen their prices up this month. The price of the education sector – services and commodities alike – has recorded the highest rise, at 9.38%, with prices of education services alone surging by 10.66%.
HCMC is one of the localities with the steepest price rise in education, at 5.99%, as local authorities have approved higher tuitions at universities, colleges and vocational schools. Other localities such as Hanoi, Can Tho and Haiphong have seen education prices advancing only 2%.
In September, the CPI in HCMC rose 0.88% while Hanoi City saw a rise of only 0.2%. The education group in HCMC was blamed for the difference between the city and other localities.
However, an expert said that the reason is that cities and provinces have applied different CPI calculation methods. Some localities do not include private schools and vocational schools in CPI calculations.
Food and catering services have also increased 0.65% month-on-month, of which food rose 0.41%, foodstuff 0.87% and restaurant services 0.19%.
On the downside, transport, and postal-telecom services have declined 0.24% and 0.01% respectively.
The September CPI has been up 4.63% against last December and 6.3% against the same period of last year.
