The Hanoi municipal People’s Committee on September 19 officiallystarted the building of an industrial and hazardous waste treatment system to generate electricity in Nam Son commune, Soc Son district.
The system is the first of its kind in Vietnam, applying advanced incinerator technology from Japan to re-use waste and produce electricity.
It has a treatment capacity of 75 tons/day for industrial and hazardous waste, and takes advantage of heat to generate power with a capacity of 1,930kW.
The total investment of the project is over VND612 billion, of which the non-refundable capital of Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) is JPY1,770 million (about over VND472 billion), while the remaining is corresponding capital.
When the plant goes into operation, it will contribute to improving energy usage efficiency and environmental protection through the construction of the incinerator systems, treatment systems to make exhaust fumes clean, heat recovery and power generator using steam turbine technology to use industrial waste for power production in Hanoi.
In addition, the plant will contribute to minimizing pressure on the solid waste dumping ground of the city, thoroughly treating the volume of industrial and hazardous waste in Hanoi and surrounding areas.
The use of energy from industrial waste treatment to produce electricity to supply power for the Nam Son waste treatment complex will contribute to easing the lack of power in the city.
The plant is scheduled to be completed within 360 days, including the construction, equipment installation and technology transfer. Therefore, the plant will be put into operation by the end of 2014.
Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Vu Hong Khanh said that the overall plan for solid waste treatment of Hanoi until 2030, and the vision to 2050, has identified that solid waste treatment projects at the municipal level will apply modern technology, mainly recycling organic and inorganic substances, burning non-recyclable inorganic solid waste and hazardous solid waste to generate power.
This project will create a new energy source, building a recycling society, which contributes to helping the capital access effective treatment technologies to minimize pollution and improve the environment to ensure sustainable development./.
