(VOV) – The first Vietnam-Japan People’s Friendship Festival opened in Hanoi on September 20, marking the 40th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties.

The opening ceremony was attended by Party Politburo member and Vietnam-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group Chairman To Huy Rua, Deputy Prime Minister and Vietnam-Japan Friendship Year Steering Committee Chief Hoang Trung Hai, and Japan-Vietnam Council for Peace and Friendship President and former Prime Minister Murayama Tomiichi,
Vietnamese National Assembly deputies, Japanese Embassy representatives, and members of the Japanese Diet were also present at the event.
In his opening speech, Deputy PM Hai described the festival as an event of significance in commemorating the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
Japan is Vietnam’s leading trade partner and largest ODA donor, and it has made unparalleled contributions to Vietnam’s socio-economic development, he noted.
Hai said the festival, which combines with other cultural and people-to-people diplomatic activities held during the friendship year, will help promote mutual understanding and reinforce the foundations for long-lasting friendship.
He expressed his hope bilateral relations will grow and flourish into the future.
Murayama Tomiichi praised Vietnam’s development achievements and hoped the two countries’ bilateral relationship will expand to other areas.
The festival will run for three days.
