(VOV) – Delegates from 31 provinces and cities nationwide gathered at a seminar in Hue City on September 18 to share their experience in supporting victims of human trafficking.

The seminar, held by the Department for Prevention of Social Evils under the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs and the Alliance Against Trafficking in Persons (AAT), aims to review the outcomes of an AAT-funded project set up in Hanoi, Bac Giang and other provinces and cities since August 2011.
The project consists of two parts: improving capacity for the project’s staff and supporting victims at communal support centres and a pilot model on sustainable re-integration into society for human trafficking victims, in three districts of Bac Giang province.
Over the past three years, the project has achieved practical results, helping raise capacity for its staff in implementing policy and supporting victims to re-integrate into the community. It has also provided training courses for more than 300 officials of 63 provinces and cities on consulting skills and basic knowledge on human trafficking, according to the Law against Human Trafficking.
A survey recently conducted in Bac Giang province shows most human trafficking victims face a number of difficulties, such as unemployment, low income, lack of life skills, discrimination, mental disorder, and sexually transmitted infection. Some children of victims do not have birth certificates or identity cards.
The project has provided 125 victims with VND8 million each to help them start up small business to escape poverty.
Participants at the seminar stressed the need to assist victims get steady jobs, and raise public awareness of human trafficking prevention and combat, especially among women and children in border and remote areas.
