A poor family in Ha Tinh province is calling for financial support to help the father treat electrical burn injuries suffered in an accident.
Dat’s right leg was cut off The father is Vo Kim Dat from Yen Lac Village, Cam Xuyen District. He is being treated at trauma center of Ha Tinh General Hospital for nearly a month after a work-related accident. On May 15, Dat and his freelance co-workers accepted a job to build a second story for a house in the neighbouring town. They carelessly let the tools touch the nearby 35KV high-voltage electric line. The electricity killed one worker immediately while Dat suffered severe burns.
Dat was transferred to a provincial hospital for first aid before being moved to the National Institute of Burns. The injuries are mostly fourth and fifth-degree burns which affect deeper tissues, such as muscle and bone. To save his life, doctors had to cut off his whole left arm and the right leg below the knee.
His left arm was removed after the accident The accident has turned the family pillar into a disabled man. Dat was shocked when he realised that he lost some limbs and has many burns that have not completely healed and bleed through the bandages while other injuries are quickly deteriorating.
The treatment and medicines have put a VND200 million (USD9,500) debt on the poor family.
Unable to bear the physical and emotional pain, Dat has told his faithful and care-giving wife, to let him die, “Just let me die. I can’t live to see you and the children suffer so keep the money for school tuition. Please don’t make me live like this.”
Dat’s wife has to shoulder a huge debt The eldest child, Vo Van Minh asked parents to let him drop out of school even though Minh is a first year student at Haiphong Maritime University. In the mean time, the 10 year old second child, has been left to stay at home for three months, under the care of their neighbours. Many villagers said with no money, the boy might also have to drop out.
“As long as I live, my family will suffer. I don’t want to be their burden, I don’t want to lie here to watch my children drop out of school.” Dat said.
