Nhan Dan Online – The National Weightlifting Championships opened on September 17 in the northern city of Hai Phong with the participation of 121 weightlifters from 19 teams across the country.
They compete for medals in the snatch and clean-and-jerk events in women’s weight divisions, between 50kg and 90kg, and men’s weight divisions between 56kg and 100kg.
19 year-old weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan from Ho Chi Minh City was on the star of the opening day of the tournament, with three gold medals in the men’s 56kg. Particularly in the snatch event, Tuan successfully lifted 131kg to break the previous national record of 130kg set by 2008 Olympic runner-up Hoang Anh Tuan at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
Kim Tuan will certainly be a great hope for Vietnamese weightlifting at regional and international events in the near future if he continues to perform so well.
At this year’s tournament, veteran weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan won three silver medals despite injuries.
Also in the first day of competition, Pham Thuy Dung of Thanh Hoa province won gold medal in the women’s 48kg, followed by Hanoi’s Nguyen Thi Hang Nga and hosts Nguyen Thi Thu.
The championships run until September 20.
