On September 17, in Hanoi, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held a conference on climate change in the Mekong Delta to offer fully integrated research, researching Mekong Delta must be placed in the context of impacts, changes to build and propose impaction mitigation plans as well as address challenges for the region.
At the conference, Mrs. Anjali Acharya, coordinator of the World Bank (WB) said that Vietnam has many scenarios, many different predictions about the effects of climate change and how to help the provinces in the Mekong Delta make decisions promptly to respond and adapt to climate changes.
However, in the context of climate change in the Mekong Delta we should pay attention to the goals of poverty reduction, the impact on the upper reaches side, offer solutions for regulations, work measures to reduce impact of floods and climate changes…
Also at the conference, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Van Thang emphasized that there are now a lot of researches on Mekong Delta, but there is no comprehensive study of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam needs to be supported by World Bank to review all the research. Hence, Vietnam will unify visions, strategies and plans for Mekong Delta. Based on the visions, Vietnam will decide to act for Mekong Delta region.
Mr. Vu Dinh Thanh, deputy department head of Department of Science and Technology said that adaptation and mitigation activities of climate change in regional Mekong Delta should integrate interdisciplinary, multi-sector or build agriculture programs, farmers and rural Mekong Delta in order to respond to climate changes, as well as connect activities towards efficiency use of resources in which there is water resource. To connect infrastructure development to serve the development of agriculture and rural areas, improve living standards and people’s income.
Mekong Delta has specific characteristics, should be desirable WB as well as the relevant authorities have investment projects to support research and boost agricultural development models to adapt to climate changes.
To assess the impact of climate changes in Mekong Delta, Mrs. Le Thi Kim Cuc, head manager of Department of Science, Technology and International Cooperation, General Department of Irrigation shared that Mekong Delta region has 13 provinces that are closely related because the solution of this province concern to other provinces Therefore, respond and adaptation plans are specific, interdisciplinary and inter-regional. In addition, work solutions with non-structural solutions keep strong transfer role for each area accordingly.
