Algeria is a North African country with 1,500km of coastline, bordering Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, Mauritania, Mali and Niger. Covering an area of 2,381,740sq.km, Algeria is the second largest country in Africa, with a population of about 37.4 million. In the economic aspect, Algeria is the seventh largest country in the world in terms of natural gas reserves and 14th in terms of petroleum reserves. Algeria is the second largest natural gas exporter in the world. In recent years, the political situation in Algeria has been stable and the Algerian economy has benefited from oil price increases; the lives of Algerian people have improved. Last year, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Algeria reached US$206.5 billion with the per-capita GDP reaching US$5,526. Regarding foreign trade, in 2012, its export value reached US$76.84 billion with main export products including petroleum, natural gas and petroleum products (these products accounted for 97 percent of the total export value). The import value reached US$47.53 billion with main import products including production materials, food, beverage and consumer goods.

Algeria has a high demand for importing the above products. Thanks to its strategic geographic location, Algeria is a gateway through which goods from Asian countries can penetrate the West and Middle African markets.

In recent years, trade between Vietnam and Algeria has continuously increased. In 2012, Vietnam’s exports to Algeria reached US$129 million, a rise of 28 percent compared with 2011, with Algeria being the fifth largest African export market of Vietnam. Vietnam’s imports from Algeria were inconsiderable, totaling US$1.2 million, mostly including wood products, carrot powder, steel and iron, materials for animal feed production pharmaceuticals and chemicals.

In the first seven months of 2013, Vietnam exported to Algeria US$101.33 million worth of products, up 15 percent compared with the same period last year (coffee US$31.52 million, rice US$28.6 million, telephones and components US$10.8 million, pepper US$10 million, seafood US$5.5 million, machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts US$4.8 million, steel and iron US$3.2 million, footwear, computer, electronic products and components, coconut flesh, auto components, textiles and garments, chemicals and plastic products. Bilateral trade remains modest and incommensurate with the potential of the two countries.
