Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has asked the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE)to cancel the Dong Nai 6 and 6A hydropower projects due to environmental concerns.
The ministry was also asked to report the case to the Prime Minister. The deputy head of the Government’s Office, Nguyen Van Tung, has also sent the Deputy Prime Minister’s decision to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
Dong Nai 6, Dong Nai 6A projects are owned by Duc Long Gia Lai Group, and the plans for these 2 projects were approved by the national electricity development plant for the period 2011-2020. However, scientists said that the projects encroach upon Cat Tien National Park.
In their first report to the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment said that the two projects will completely annihilate over 372 ha of forest and badly affect water resources for the people living downstream.
According to the ministry, government should consider all factors including economy, natural resources and biodiversity before implementing any hydroproject. Therefore they have asked that all hydropower projects on Dong Nai River be re-evaluated.
After the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment proposed to re-evaluate the construction of the two hydropower projects, due to their threat of environmental pollution, the Deputy Prime Minister has given his agreement and asked the Ministry of Industry and Trade to re-evaluate them.
Truong Van Vo, deputy head of the National Assembly Deputies Delegation of Dong Nai Province, also agreed with the decision as it should prevent potential environmental problems that might be caused by these projects.
