According to Nguyen Van Dung, chairman of the HCMC Fine Arts and Jewelry Association, no companies in the city import jewelries from Italy because they will have difficulties selling the products at exorbitant prices to cover related costs and taxes.

Dung admitted that local sellers still introduced their products as Italian items although the items are all smuggled into the country via border gates from neighboring countries, mainly from China.

Meanwhile, the former director of a big jewelry company in HCMC said that Italian jewelries were made in China using Italian technology and then imported into Vietnam for sale. Despite having designs more attractive than local items, such jewelry products are cheaper than those made by big local firms.

“In fact, local jewelry items are also made in line with Italian technology, but imported jewelry due to better processing experiences looks nicer than those made by big domestic jewelry enterprises,” the former director said. She noticed the local market now was flooded with imported items like necklaces, bracelets and rings branded as Italian-made.

Chairman Dung complained that domestic companies were running into troubles due to failing to compete with imported jewelries. There are only 70 entities asking for operational licenses for jewelry production in the city while the number was up to thousands before, he said.
