People in Dien Bien Province commemorate General Vo Nguyen Giap

PANO - The party committee, authority, and people of Dien Bien Province have organised memorial services for General Vo Nguyen Giap, who passed away on October 4^th.

On early October 7^th, hundreds of veterans, including sick ones, gathered at the hall of the provincial military command to pay tribute to General Vo Nguyen Giap.

Colonel Tao Van Khun, Chairman of Dien Bien Provincial Veterans’ Association, said in tears that the death of General Vo Nguyen Giap was a great loss that could not be compensated. This land had witnessed General Vo Nguyen Giap’s daily activities and his talent in commanding the Vietnam People’s Army at the resounding victory of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign that shook the world.

Colonel Tao Van Khun recalled the teaching of General Vo Nguyen Giap to veterans at the 50^th anniversary of the historical Dien Bien Phu victory, to “live and show brave and revolutionary heroism together with descendants to uphold the political regime, defend the Party, people and accomplishments of the revolution”.

Veterans observed a minute of silence to pay respect to General Vo Nguyen Giap.

The provincial veterans’ association set up an altar for General Vo Nguyen Giap, so that veterans could offer incense to their eldest brother.

Also on October 7^th, at the flag-saluting ceremony of the Hanoi-Dien Bien Phu Primary School, 2,000 teachers and students observed a minute of silence in commemoration for the legendary general Vo Nguyen Giap.

Teacher Hoang Thi Diep said that she could not hold back tears, listening to reports on the life and career of General Vo Nguyen Giap. She still remembered her opportunity to take students to welcome the General when he visited Dien Bien, and the General’s sentiments for Dien Bien’s party committee, authority, army and people, especially ethnic minorities. She felt the death of General Vo Nguyen Giap was a great loss in her life.
