QUANG NINH (VNS) – Co To Island in northern Quang Ninh Province was officially connected to the national grid yesterday by undersea cable.
The cable replaces highly expensive power produced on small island generators.
The event was important not only to the province, but also the whole nation, said National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong.
She said the connection not only improved living conditions on the island but also helped provide power to defend the islands, situated in the East Sea.
The project was backed by the Northern Electricity General Corporation and the province at a total cost of VND 1.1 trillion (US$52 million). It began in December.
The project is the first in the country to lay power cables on the sea floor, according to corporation president Nguyen Phuc Vinh. — VNS
