Vietnam will actively engage in the establishment of the United Nations’ new development agenda for the post 2015 period.
The statement was made by Vietnam’s Ambassador to the UN Le Hoai Trung at the General Debate of the UN General Assembly’s Second Committee of the 68th session, held in New York from October 9-11.
During the event, participants voiced their concern over the global economic situation, which remains difficult and continues to have negative impacts on employment, social stability and the realization of the MDGs, adding that climate change has also affected common sustainable development.
Ambassador Trung expressed Vietnam’s strong belief that one of the UN’s primary priorities is the promotion of mandates entrusted to the organisation, in particular those related to the realisation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
As a country on pace to achieve the MDGs by 2015, Vietnam understands the profound importance of MDG realisation in lifting people out of poverty, improving people’s lives and contributing to the overall socio-economic development of each nation, the diplomat said.
The country also believes that sustainable development lies at the core of the new development agenda, and at the same time it is crucial to create a favourable international economic, trade and financial environment to facilitate equitable and inclusive economic growth, he added.
Trung made it clear that while ensuring an open, inclusive and transparent process is important, building a new development agenda has to be an inter-governmental effort to ensure the accountability of national governments.
The principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities were also underscored to guide the process.
