PANO – The first “Ngo” Boat Race Festival of the ethnic Khmer people in the Mekong Delta region was officially kicked off on November 15th in Soc Trang city, Soc Trang province.
“Ngo” boat race is part of activities to celebrate the Ok Om Bok Festival that falls on 14th and 15th of every tenth lunar month.
This year, it is the first time the festival is promoted to the national level festival by the Prime Minister.
Besides the special events during the opening and closing ceremonies, the festival includes “Ngo” boat races, art performances and folk games, aiming at popularizing the province’s tourism potential in line with preserving and bringing into play the local unique cultural values.
This year’s “Ngo” boat race on November 16 and 17th draws 62 teams, both men’s and women’s, from provinces of Tra Vinh, Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang, Hau Giang and Vinh Long, Can Tho city and the host Soc Trang. Total awards valued about VND 1 billion.
