(VOV) – The legislative bodies of Vietnam and India need to increase visit exchanges to share experience in legislation and oversee the implementation of agreements between their governments.
The view was shared at a meeting in New Delhi on November 21 between visiting Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and Lower House Speaker Meira Kumar.
Trong said the Vietnam National Assembly is carrying out its operational reform and it wants to learn about past experiences from foreign countries, including the India parliament.
Cooperation between the two legislative bodies is a key pillar in bilateral relations that need to be promoted in the future, he said.
Trong briefed his host on the result of his talks with PM Manmohan Singh to deepen Vietnam-India strategic partnership in the five key areas, spanning politics, economics-trade-investment, national security-defence, culture, and science-technology.
He confirmed Vietnam considers India a close, reliable, and faithful friend, and it attaches great importance to expanding the strategic partnership with India.
Meira Kumar said India considers Vietnam a pillar in its “Look East” policy and wants to boost cooperation with Vietnam, and through the country with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The Indian parliament supports efforts to increase the strategic partnership between the two countries, especially in national security-defence, trade and investment, as well as in culture, education-training and tourism, she said.
Both host and guest said the two legislative bodies need to further coordinate closely at multilateral forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting (ASEP) and the ASEAN People’s Forum (APF).
Trong thanked the India parliament for backing the Vietnam National Assembly’s bid to host the 132nd IPU General Assembly in 2015.
The same day, Trong visited the Parliament Museum that exhibits India’s treasures.
