The General Confederation of the Evangelical Churches of Vietnam (South) convened its fourth General Assembly in Ho Chi Minh City on November 12, with nearly 2,000 pastors, dignitaries and Protestants from southern provinces in attendance.

During the four-day meeting, delegates will review the organisation’s performance during its third tenure from 2009-2013 and elect an executive board for the fourth tenure.

The event was also held as preparations for the upcoming unification between General Confederation of the Evangelical Churches of Vietnam (South) and the Evangelical Church of Vietnam (North).

The General Confederation of the Evangelical Churches of Vietnam (South) boasts 700,000 followers in 34 cities and provinces from Quang Tri southward.

Over the past years, ECVS members have joined efforts with other religious followers in drives to reduce poverty by encouraging production and trade, building a cultural life and engaging in charitable activities.

Addressing the event, Deputy Head of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Bui Thanh Ha said he believes with the policy of accompanying the nation, ECVS dignitaries and followers will fulfil their duties to serve the nation, contributing to national construction and defence.

Vietnam is home to more than one million Protestants, who belong to over 60 different Protestant organisations, sects and groups. The Evangelical Church of Vietnam (North) has 15 chapters and more than 100,000 followers, and is the largest Protestant organisation in the north.-VNA
