The Tram Chim National Park in Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap held Nov 30 an event called “Welcome Vietnamese migrant birds 2013″, which seeks to promote awareness of local migrant birds and their migrating season as well as call for action for the conservation of birds and the habitats on which they depend.

The event was jointly put on by the park, British Trust for Ornithology, Wildlife Tourism Co. and Vietnam Nature Center.

According to Nguyen Van Hung, head of the park, the park is currently home to 231 species of birds. Among them 32 rare ones, particularly the red-headed cranes, are listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List.

At the event, participants were provided with the characteristics of local bird species and details on their migrating seasons. Nguyen Hoai Bao, from the University of Natural Sciences, said that migrating birds in Vietnam account for over 60% of the local bird population. Several species can fly for eight days on end without stopping for food or rest.

The highly-endangered red-headed cranes typically take shelter and feed in the Tram Chim park starting January and take off and breed elsewhere in May every year.
