— The 28th Diplomatic Conference closed in Hanoi on Friday after five days of reviewing the diplomatic sector’s performance in the past and working out measures to accomplish its tasks in the coming time. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh required the Ministry’s units, ambassadors and heads of Vietnamese representative agencies abroad to strictly follow the strategic orientations for foreign affairs specified by the 11th National Party Congress and fulfill their assigned tasks.


Society


— In an effort to protect consumers’ health during the upcoming Tet (lunar New Year), the Ho Chi Minh City Steering Board for Food Safety and Hygiene has set up teams to launch inspections of food safety across the city from December 20 to January 25, 2014. Inspections will be focused on products that are usually used during Tet. Violators of food safe regulations and their violating products will be publicized via media.


— So far this year, police in HCMC have handled more than 6,200 criminal offences, a 5 percent increase from the same period last year, local police reported on Friday. This rate is lower than the country’s average increase of 8.5 percent. Police have arrested about 2,100 criminals from 199 gangs so far.


— Two workers died in a rockslide caused by prolonged rains at a quarry in Thai Nguyen District, northern Hai Phong City on Thursday evening. This quarry has just resumed operation after being suspended for six months following the deaths of nine workers there in May 2013.


— Doctors at the Pediatrics Hospital 1 in HCMC have successfully performed a surgery on a 2-year-old infant who suffered from the left atrial appendage aneurysm, a very rare heart-related problem in the world. The child, of Dong Nai province, has recovered after the operation and was discharged from the hospital.

— The Saigon Union of Trading Co-operatives (Saigon Co.Opmart), one of the leading supermarket chains in Vietnam, has opened two more supermarkets, one of which – Co.op Mart Vung Tau – 2, on Le Hong Phong Street in Vung Tau City, and the other – Co.op Mart Hoang Mai in Hoang Mai District, Hanoi. The two new facilities have taken the total number of supermarkets of Saigon Co.Opmart nationwide to 67.


Lifestyle


— Singer Thu Minh and her husband have set up a charitable fund called Thu Minh Foundation with its initial amount of VND10 billion (US$480,000). This amount is planned to be spent on charity activities for two years, the singer said. Before setting up the foundation, the couple has donated VND2 billion to victims of recent storms and floods in central provinces.

— By 11 pm yesterday, December 20, Vietnam ranked third in the medal board for the ongoing 27th SEA Games in Myanmar, with 66 golds, 72 silvers and 74 bronzes, while Thailand topped the list with 93 golds, 89 silvers and 72 bronzes, and Myanmar ranked second with 70 golds, 55 silvers and 69 bronzes. Ranking fourth and fifth were Indonesia and Malaysia.
