HA NOI (VNS)— More than 14,000 alleged cases of crime were uncovered during the first quarter of this year, up 4.8 per cent from the previous quarter, reports the National Steering Committee for Combatting and Preventing Crime.
Almost 4,000 of the incidents related to heroin trafficking. More than 7,000 people allegedly involved were arrested and 98 kilogrammes of heroin and 600 kilogrammes of marijuana seized, the committee reported at a teleconference on Monday.
In the same quarter, authorities also busted 58 cases of human trafficking and arrested 131 people.
The director of Ha Noi Police, Nguyen Duc Chung, warned that new types of crimes had emerged in the city, including multi-level marketing, which was being used to cheat other sales people involved.
He said that smuggling of goods from northern border areas into the capital city had increased, particularly household appliances, garments, textiles and poultry.
Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Dang Huy Dong proposed ban multi-level marketing to put an end to this kind of crime.
Addressing the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked ministries, departments, and localities to intensify the fight against crime, especially that involving transnational movements, hi-tech elements and foreigners. — VNS
