KUALA LUMPUR (VNS)— The Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia and the Malaysian Foreign Ministry held a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on Friday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their nations’ diplomatic ties.
Addressing the event, Malaysian Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay expressed his pleasure at the continuously developing relations between Viet Nam and Malaysia since they set up diplomatic ties on March 30, 1973.
Both countries are now ASEAN members and have become each other’s important economic partner, he said.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Malaysia Nguyen Hong Thao said that since the two countries signed the joint statement on the comprehensive co-operation framework in the 21st century, their relations had ceaselessly developed in various fields.
Despite the global economic downturn, two-way trade between Viet Nam and Malaysia hit over US$9 billion in 2012, a rise of 25.27 per cent compared to the previous year’s figure.
By 2012, Malaysia had more than 400 projects in Viet Nam with a total registered investment of over 10 billion, ranking seventh among Viet Nam’s investors.
In addition, bilateral co-operation in education and training, culture, sports and tourism has also recorded encouraging results. Last year, 200,000 Vietnamese visited Malaysia while the number of Malaysian tourists to Viet Nam was 300,000. — VNS
