The Central Tropical Disease Hospital launched a bank for microorganism genes funded by the US government in Hanoi on December 4.

According to the director of the hospital Nguyen Van Kinh, Vietnam has to cope with an increasing number of diseases caused by microorganisms. The development of the microorganism gene bank will help improve the capacity of disease diagnosis and treatment as well as scientific research and training on microorganism-caused diseases.

Via the US Defence Threat Reduction Agency, the US government has also provided lab equipment for the bank, which includes fridges to keep the microorganism types.

According to head of the testing department Nguyen Vu Trung, the hospital is the only one in Vietnam to have a system of nearly 20 fridges to store disease samples and types of macroorganism serving research for disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention.-VNA
