According to PetroVietnam’s statement, the credits include an export credit contract worth US$330 million provided by Export-Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM), a trade finance contract worth US$270 million by KEXIM and over US$195 million worth of loans provided by other foreign banks.


PetroVietnam will use the funds to pay for main equipments for the thermal power plant such as generators, machines and supportive devices. The equipments are supplied by a consortium including Japan’s Sojtiz and South Korea’s Daelim.


Foreign banks giving the loans to PetroVietnam are KEXIM, HSBC, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd (BTMU), China Development Bank, Citibank, Mizuho Bank, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Ltd and Standard Chartered Bank.


Construction of Thai Binh 2 thermal power plant began in March, 2011 with the total investment of nearly US$1.6 billion.


The project has two turbines with the combined capacity of 1,200 MW, generating around 6.7 billion kWh to the national grid each year. The first turbine is expected to start operating in the second quarter of 2014.
