(VOV) – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh has said the diplomatic sector will proactively step up international integration in 2014 to realise the Party’s resolutions.

In a recent New Year interview granted to the media, Minh said the world, and the Asia-Pacific region in particular, will most likely continue experiencing unexpected complications in 2014, and one of the diplomatic sector’s primary tasks is to maintain a peaceful and stable environment for national development.

To this end, he said Vietnam must prioritise strengthening friendship and cooperation with neighbouring countries, especially Laos, Cambodia, other ASEAN states, China and other countries in the region.

It also needs to reasonably address pending issues and those arising from relations with countries in a fair manner in line with international norms.

Vietnam’s overall objective is to seek to develop relations with strategic and comprehensive partners in a deep, efficient and stable manner, while speeding up the implementation of mutually beneficial agreements.

The country has established strategic and comprehensive partnerships with 24 countries, including world powers such as Russia, China, India, France, and the UK. It also entered into a comprehensive partnership with the US in 2013.

In 2014 the diplomatic sector will improve economic diplomacy by studying countries in transition to a new economic paradigm and making recommendations to the Party and State.

It will strive to gather support for negotiations of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreements and free trade agreements with the European Union and the Customs Union (comprising Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan).

It will also continue lobbying more countries to recognise Vietnam’s market economy status. The economic model has been recognised by 43 countries, including 8 G-20s.

Minh added the diplomatic sector will work to support businesses in expanding outlets, seeking new partners, and protecting their interest in trade disputes.

The sector will also strive to make the most of bilateral and multilateral diplomacy for national construction and defence, and be well prepared for Vietnam’s UN peacekeeping and UN Human Rights Council operations in 2014.

Another important task of the diplomatic sector in 2014 is to strengthen overseas Vietnamese affairs and enhance communications abroad to elevate Vietnam’s position globally, he concluded.
