Hundreds of people in Ha Nam Province have built tents around a local cement factory to oppose the pollution coming from it.
According to a number of local residents, since the factory came into operation, the surrounding area has become polluted, affecting lives of hundreds of local households. Everyday, hundreds of trucks come and go from the factory, damaging local roads, which makes them slippery in rain and dusty in the sun.
Despite complaining about the case to management agencies, the situation has not yet been dealt with. Over the past five days, local people have set up tents and used soil to prevent trucks from coming to the factory.
Other signs of protest are the coffins, drums and ribbons they have set in front of the factory.
Xuan Thanh Cement Factory was built in 2011 with an annual designed capacity of 3.6 million tonnes per year, at an investment of VND5.2 trillion (USD246.7 million).
