Women’s tennis team set up for Fed Cup


The national women’s tennis team is starting training in preparation for the Fed Cup qualification.


The five-member team will practise under two coaches in HCM City and Da Lat until early February before taking part in the Cup’s Group II against 11 rivals including Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealands, Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Turkmenistan.


The Vietnamese team lacks its strongest athletes, Huynh Phuong Dai Trang and Nguyen Ai Ngoc Van, who are taking part in personal training courses in the US.


The Viet Nam Tennis Federation set a target of being in the top eight.


The tournament will be organised in Astana, Kazakhstan on February 4-8.

T&T are in good spirits after enjoying a perfect start to the season by thrashing Becamex Binh Duong 4-2 in the opening round last weekend.


Gia Lai, who finished third last season, certainly have the ability to trouble the defending champions, and will be going into the match fresh having sat out the first round of games last week.


The V-League has an odd number of teams this year, so one club will be rested each round.


In the early game, Ninh Binh are favourites to record their first win of the season against Quang Ninh at home.


Nam extends winning streak in Copa Gatorade


Young Vietnamese tennis player Ly Hoang Nam is attracting attention in the Gatorade 2014 tourney in Venezuela following two consecutive back-to-back wins on January 17.


In the men’s singles, Nam convincingly defeated Bastian Reyes of Chile with a final score of 6-1 and 6-0.


With this victory, Nam earned 600 points, most certain to increase his position in the upcoming International Tennis Federation (ITF)’s ratings.


In the men’s doubles, Ly Hoang Nam and his partner Adrian Andrzejczuk of Poland qualified for the quarterfinals by beating Leshem of Israel and Shcherba of Ukraine who were seeded No5 coming into the tourney.


They next face off with the leading team of Choinski of Germany and Ried of Chile.
