A couple in Thai Binh Province, who are both over 80-years old, have been struggling to feed and clothe their grandson who suffers from a disability and has been abandoned by his parents for nearly three years.
Tung’s deformed chest
Dao Van Tung is living with his grandparents in Hamlet 5, Dong Quang Commune. He was born with deformities in the legs and chest but his life became more unfortunate when he was gradually abandoned by his parents.
Tung’s father, Dao Van Tich, who suffered from slight mental illness, left home when the boy was just four months old. A short time later, his mother, Vu Thi Hien, left him with his elderly grandparents.
“My son was mentally challenged, but he insisted on getting married, so we agreed. We don’t know why he went away after his son was born,” said the grandfather, Dao Van Tu, said.
Elderly couple taking care of little grandson
Tung’s grandmother, Vu Thi Chinh, said, “He lacked loving parents. I can’t hold back my tears when I look into his eyes.”
The grandparents were once devoted parents who carefully took care of their own children when they were small. Now the elderly couple are compelled to be parents again at the age of over 80. Their eyesight is failing, leading to difficulties in looking after a small child.
“When Tung was a baby, sometimes we accidentally poured milk, splashing his eyes or nose. We didn’t realise the mistake until he reeked of milk and cried,” the couple said.
Uncertain future of unfortunate child
Pham Van Bong, a communal cadre said, “The situation of the elderly couple is the most desperate in the commune. We’ve provided them with some support but it’s not much. Tu is provided with an allowance for war invalids, which is just enough to cover their daily food. Other support comes for the baby, such as a milk and diaper allowance donated by neighbours.”
Now the elderly couple wishes to live as long as possible so as to continue raising their grandson. “We hope that some kind-hearted people will adopt him after we are not around to take care of him,” they said.
