Hai Duong provincial Steering Board for Blindness Prevention and Control on February 21 summarized the prevention and control of blindness in 2013 and deployed tasks for 2014.


Mr. Nguyen Van Que, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, Head of the Steering Board, attended the event.


The provincial Steering Board for Blindness Prevention and Control in 2013 directed the health and social insurance sectors to reform administrative procedures in referral for patients to undergo cataract surgery.


Communication and education for people were promoted to enhance knowledge of a number of major blinding diseases and prevention and treatment methods.


During the year, the province trained two Phaco surgeons, three eye nursing technicians, and 70 teachers with skills of communication and screening for refractive errors.


The provincial Ophthalmology and Dermatology Hospital coordinated with medical centers in districts, provincial town, city, and schools to examine, detect, and cure children with refractive errors.


The Ophthalmology and Dermatology Hospital on February 21 inaugurated a five-storey patient boarding house with 50 sickbeds funded by the Fred Hollows Foundation (Australia) with a total budget of VND5 billion.


Hai Duong is one of 20 provinces and cities in the country funded by the Fred Hollows Foundation to implement the comprehensive eye care development project.


Under the project, USD1 million has been funded to build seven eye care and treatment works, many equipment and techniques have been provided for hospitals, over 1,000 poor and near poor people and policy households have undergone eye surgery, more than 2,000 pupils have been examined, screened, and offered glasses, seven doctors have been trained in specialities, etc. since 2010.
