Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Uong Chu Luu has asked the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang to swiftly implement the newly-amended Constitution and consider it a key task in the publicity of laws and education work in 2014.

During his tour to the locality on February 28, the legislator also called on Kien Giang to improve the quality of judicial activities along with building up a strong contingent of proficient judges and procurators.

NA Vice Chairman Luu praised the achievements the province attained in economics, social affairs, national defence and security, justice and Constitution enforcement in 2013.

He urged Kien Giang to accelerate agricultural restructuring and production transformation in order to keep its leading position in rice cultivation.

Apart from rice and shrimp, the province should farm other trees and animals that have high economic values and are suitable for the locality’s natural conditions, he said.

The official also suggested Kien Giang pour more investment into aquaculture, services, tourism and marine transportation, especially in Phu Quoc island district.

Kien Giang was also requested to remove red tape in administrative procedures and offered open policies in order to attract more investors in the district.

Regarding the building of new-style rural areas, the legislator said the province needs to pay attention to infrastructure while seeking ways to improve rural residents’ living standards.

It is a must for Kien Giang to accurately assess the quality of education-training and healthcare sectors, he said, calling on the locality to continue implementing policies towards people who have rendered services to the country, the poor and ethnic minorities.

The province is striving to raise its economic growth rate from 9.5 percent in 2013 to 10.5 percent or higher in 2014.

The locality’s per capita income is projected to hit 2,364 USD this year with the number of poor households dropping by 1.5-1.8 percent.

Rice output is set to reach 4.6 million tonnes and aquatic products, 612,850 tonnes – helping the province rake in 670 million USD in export revenue.-VNA
