To obtain the target, the province is expected to invest in developing the rural infrastructure, increase vocational training and job creation, build up effective production models for poor families to apply, and well apply policies on housing, medical, educational and preferential loan assistance among the poor.

There are currently over 43,300 poor families in the province, accounting for over 16.6% of its population.

In 2013, the province spent over VND647 billion to carry out poverty reduction programs, contributing to helping nearly 6,500 poor families escape poverty, including 2,812 ethnic Khmer people.

In the southern province of Vinh Long, the implementation of poverty reduction policies is one of the important tasks of its socio-economic development strategy. In 2014 and the years to come, the province targets to reduce the poverty rate by 1-2%.

At first, the province will promptly carry out social welfare policies, especially policies for revolutionary contributors, poor and nearly-poor families.

Social welfare constructions serving communities in remote, ethnic minority-inhabited and extremely disadvantaged regions will receive concentrated investment to rapidly narrow the gap between the rich and the poor, between urban and rural areas.

The province will facilitate conditions for over 13,500 nearly-poor families to lengthen the time of accessing policy benefits on medical treatment, school fee exemption and reduction, and loans for job creation, ensuring that they do not become poor again.

From 2011 to 2013, the province mobilised over VND620 billion for the poor. Meanwhile, from 2005 to 2013, the poverty reduction program of the province helped over 55,000 families escape poverty, lowering the number of poor and nearly-poor families, contributing to stabilising social welfare, promoting economic growth and sustainable development./.
