VietJetAir signs USD9-billion contract for 100 Airbus aircraft

Vietnam’s private airline VietJetAir has signed a USD9-billion contract with Airbus to buy 100 aircraft.

The order was finalised at the Singapore Airshow by Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, vice chairwoman and CEO of VietJetAir and Fabrice Brégier, president and CEO of Airbus.


The purchase agreement covers firm orders for 42 A320neo, 14 A320ceo and 7 A321ceo, plus 30 purchase rights to meet its future expansion plans. Under the contract, VietJetAir will also rent eight additional planes from Airbus. The first of the planes will be delivered to VietJetAir within the year.


Airbus highly appreciates Asia Pacific’s potential. According to the company, the region may need around 11,000 airplanes in the next 20 years and regional airlines will top the world in aircraft demand in time time to come.


Airbus forecasts that the commercial air fleet in Asia Pacific will about double in the next 20 years to around 12,000.


VietJetAir took to the skies in 2011 and was the first private Vietnamese airline to operate domestic and international flights. Today the they operate a fleet of 11 leased A320s on 20 routes, including domestic destinations, Bangkok, Seoul and Kunming, China.


Fabrice Brégier was cited by the Daily Post as saying,”We look forward to working with VietJetAir as it brings ever more affordable air travel to the fast growing South East Asian market.”


Luu Duc Khanh, managing director of VietJetAir, said “We look forward to developing our business across the Asia-Pacific region. Airbus will be our strategic partner in providing us with the most economic and comfortable aircraft and work to coordinate with VietJetAir in relevant training programmes.”
