Nhan Dan Online – Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has said that the revision of the 1999 Criminal Code should be aligned with the spirit of the amended Constitution of 2013.
Speaking on March 15 at a nationwide online conference held to review the implementation of the Code, Deputy PM Phuc stressed that the revised code should effectively protect human rights and the fundamental rights of citizens, and encourage people’s positive participation in preventing and controlling crimes to protect themselves and others.
The Criminal Code was adopted on December 21, 1999 at the seventh working session of the National Assembly’s 10th tenure and took effect on July 1, 2000.
Since 2000, certain shortcomings with the code have become evident that have presented difficulties for preventing and controlling criminals.
Deputy PM Phuc stressed that since the code is one of the country’s most vital legal documents, its amendment should be taken up in a very careful and critical manner.
He urged the Ministry of Justice to work with relevant ministries and sectors to research ways to address the limitations and increase transparency in order to create a firm legal foundation in the fight against crime.
The new code should create a legal corridor for growing the socialist-oriented market economy, ensuring healthy and equal competition among economic sectors, and balancing economic development with environmental protection, he added.
