First seaplane successfully lands on Truong Sa

PANO – The successful landing of a DHC-6 Twin Otter on Truong Sa Lon island by the Air Force-Naval force on March 19th paved the way for the airlift by seaplanes between the mainland and distant islands.


Rear Admiral Le Minh Thanh, Deputy Commander of the Navy and Rear Admiral Nguyen The An, Deputy Chief of the Staff of the Navy, inspected the preparations for the flight and led a delegation to visit the island by the DHC-6.


It took two hours for the aircraft crew to fly to and land safely on the Truong Sa archipelago.


The DHC-6, made by Viking Air, a Canadian company, can fly up to 300km per hour to a distance of 1,832km in nearly 9 hours, and take off and land on a short runway, grass, soil or sand.


The operation of such aircraft is part of the road map on building the naval air force to meet requirements of protecting the national sovereignty over sea and islands in the new context.
