(VOV) -Thousands of Ho Chi Minh City football fans stayed up all night on July 13 glued to their TV sets for the World Cup final match between Germany and Argentina.
Lashing rains could not prevent fans, mainly university students, from gathering around big screens at cafes, restaurants, and cultural houses to catch the action in party atmospheres fuelled by music, food, drink and games.
“This is the first final match that my friends I and have watched in a place as crowded as this. It makes me feel like the World Cup is taking place in Vietnam,” said Luong Thi Huyen Trang, a 3rd year student at HCMC Law University.
“This is the most unforgettable memory of my student life”, she added.
Restaurants, street food courts, and sport bars did not miss a golden chance, offering services throughout the night. Crowds of fans were really excited by the impressive performance by both German and Argentinean players.
In the end, Germany emerged victorious, winning the World Cup, defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final at Brazil’s storied Maracana stadium.
Mario Götze became an instant legend in the 112th minute, when he brilliantly cradled a cross from super sub André Schürrle and fired into the far corner past Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero for the Cup-winning goal.
“Our wishes came true. Germany are the champions,” shouted Nguyen Anh Tu, watching football at a café in District 3. “This is what we have expected for a long time, so we could not sleep tonight“.
Argentina fans were not too disappointed by their favourite team.
“Germany deserved to be the World Cup winners but I am proud of Argentina and believe that the team will shine at the next World Cup taking place in Russia”, said Ngo Quoc Dai, a big supporter of Argentina.
