The rescue of the bear, named Ti Map, will be located in Binh Thuan, the second province in the country after Hue to become bear bile free.

Ti Map was bought by Nguyen Hong Viet in 2000 while still a cub. He spent the next 14 years being tapped for bile, which is still sold for use by traditional medicine practitioners.

After learning that the government has been encouraging households to hand over their bears, Viet asked the provincial Forest Management Board to find a safe place to take care of the bear. The board contacted him with several animal rescue centres in the southern region, but they all refused to take the animal until Animals Asia was willing to help him.
