Police in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap arrested a local teacher Friday for allegedly throwing acid on four other teachers and educational officials, leaving the latter heavily burned.
Initial reports from Thanh Binh District police said that early that day Pham Minh Tien, a teacher with Tan Phu Junior High School, went to the district’s educational division’s office on a motorbike, carrying an acid container.
He headed straight to the room of Do Phuoc Vinh, head of the division, and threw the thick solution on Vinh’s face.
He also attacked Dinh Van Can, deputy chief of the division, when Can came to the room following Vinh’s cries for help.
After that, Tien left the office on his bike and headed to Thanh Binh Junior High School, which is about one and half kilometers away.
There Tien attacked Nguyen Van Chien, principal of the school, and teacher Nguyen Thi Minh Trang.
When he was running out of the school, he was apprehended by police and local people.
The victims were rushed to Dong Thap Province’s General Hospital, but since their burns were serious they were transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for treatment.
Col. Dang Minh The, head of Thanh Binh District’s police division, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that Tien admitted to attacking the people due to personal conflicts.
Tien’s wife was once dismissed from the position of a principal of a local kindergarten due to financial wrongdoings, The said.
Meanwhile, Tien had conflicts with Chien, which resulted in his being transferred to Tan Phu Junior High School.
After the transfer, the teacher filed complaints with local agencies, accusing Chien of several wrongdoings.
Police are investigating the case.
