A Vietnamese person who lives in Kharkov and requested anonymity said that there is tension now there but it is “psychological only.”

The Vietnamese there are living under normal conditions which are however a little tenser than previously, he said.

The chief of Kharkov province has announced that the authorities will prevent violence from occurring but he did not say he will take sides in the political crisis in the country, according to the Vietnamese.

Kharkov is still quiet while in Kiev, the Ukrainian capital city, and a number of other eastern and southeastern provinces, the situation is more serious, the man quoted the province chief as saying.

Doan Manh Cuong, a 24-year-old master’s student in Kharkov, told Tuoi Tre that the security atmosphere in Ukraine is rather strained following recent developments.

“A number of people are worried that if a war breaks out they cannot return to Vietnam in time,” Cuong said, adding that at least three of his acquaintances are preparing for a return to Vietnam while waiting for the unrest in Ukraine to calm down.

Cuong also said he will come back to Vietnam in October 2014, when he finishes his training course.

“Two months ago, one dollar was equivalent to 8 Ukrainian hryvnia, but now the exchange rate is one dollar to 11 hryvnia,” he added.

Ukraine is now locked in a stand-off between pro-Russia people and those who support the interim government, which swept to power last month after the ousting of former president Viktor Yanukovych.

The Vietnamese Embassy in Ukraine has said it is closely monitoring the situation of Vietnamese in the country to protect them from any adverse influences by the political crisis.

Vietnamese citizens in Ukraine can contact the Embassy at the hotlines +380503320535 and +380503359097, and their relatives in Vietnam can contact the Foreign Ministry’s Consular Department at 0918370497 for instructions and assistance in emergency cases.
