More than 1,000 traditional brick kilns in the central province of Phu Yen will be shut down by the end of this year, according to the province’s People’s Committee. The kilns, which use low-quality coal and out-moded methods, are causing serious air pollution. They continue to operate despite a ban by the province two years ago.

Binh Dinh faces severe water shortage
Nearly 3,000ha of the winter-spring rice crop in central Binh Dinh Province lack water due to a prolonged drought. The water shortage will affect 770 ha of the coming summer-autumn rice crop and 10,454 ha of subsidiary crops if the drought continues for several more weeks.
More than 7,000 households will also face a water shortage, according to Binh Dinh Province’s People’s Committee. The province has asked the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for VND56.4 billion (US$2.6 million) from the State budget to help ease the situation.

VN mangoes shipped to S Korea
More than 200kg of Vietnamese mangoes were exported to South Korea recently, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Fruit preservation and packaging standards have met Korea’s requirements, the ministry said. The mango shipment was the first that had been officially certified under Korean standards. Mango is the second Vietnamese fruit, after dragonfruit, to enter the Korean market.
