Recently, during the implementation of the “cow bank” within impoverished districts and border communes, the Hoa Vang district Red Cross of Da Nang City gave five reproductive cows worth VND50 million to families in Hoa Son commune.

Hoa Son is one of the midland and mountainous communes in Hoa Vang district. At present, there are currently 603 impoverished families of the 3,000 in the commune.

During the cow-granting ceremony, Phan Thanh Binh, a representative for the receivers, happily pledged to care for the animal so he could bring economic value to his family, stabilise their lives and escape poverty.

The “cow bank” program, launched by the Vietnam Red Cross (VRC), is being carried out in poor districts across the country. The program provides cows to poor families so that they can develop breeding activities, providing a sustainable way to get out of poverty. The program has helped many impoverished families, especially those in extremely poor border areas.

In 2013 and 2014, the project aims to mobilise VND100 billion to buy 10,000 cows for distribution in 1,000 border communes and 62 impoverished districts./.
