Delta outlines agriculture development plan

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has approved an agriculture and rural plan for the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta to 2020 that calls for annual production of 24.5 million tonnes of paddy and 3.5 million tonnes of fisheries.


By 2020, the delta would have an average annual value of VND130 million (US$6,200) per 1ha of farmland and VND250 million ($11,900) per 1 ha of aquatic cultivation land.


The Delta targets keeping the area under rice cultivation at 3.25 million hectares.

Quang Nam to use tissue culture for ginseng


Quang Nam Province on Wednesday said it would plant 2,000 Ngoc Linh ginseng plants by tissue cultures in the wild. After two years of research, the province has successfully propagated the precious ginseng by this method.

Poaching threatens wild elephants’ survival


Wild elephants in the central province of Nghe An are facing the threat of extinction because of illegal poaching and a diminishing area of forested land.


Nghe An, one of the country’s three provinces with the largest number of wild elephants, has about 17 of these animals, according to the Pu Mat National Park.

Can Tho bans sand mining at night


The Can Tho People’s Committee yesterday began banning sand mining activities on the Hau River at night. Under the decision, licensed sand miners are allowed to exploit sand between 6am and 6pm, and in areas that are more than 3km away from the Can Tho and Vam Cong bridges and 200m away from riverbanks.

Hue festival to attract 80,000 tourists


About 80,000 visitors, including 50,000 foreign visitors, have booked hotels in Hue City during the 2014 Hue Festival from April 12-20, according to the Thua Thien-Hue Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism’s Tourism Bureau.
