Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh had a meeting with the overseas Vietnamese community and students in the United Kingdom on the evening of April 16.


The meeting took place at the headquarters of the Embassy of Vietnam in the UK and it was attended by all the officials and staff of the embassy and Vietnam’s representative agencies in the UK.


On behalf of the Government, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh informed overseas Vietnamese about the socio-economic situation of the country and emphasized the great achievements that Vietnam had made over almost 30 years of innovation.


In spite of being affected by the global economic-financial crisis, Vietnam maintained macroeconomic stability, inflation control, sustainable development and maintenance of the social security policy for the poor and policy-beneficiary families.


Although Vietnam is still poor, the country is doing well with the educational universalisation policy, health insurance and now 96% of people are using electricity.


In terms of foreign policy, Vietnam maintains international integration policies in all areas and has achieved great results. In the economic field, Vietnam had been a country with a trade deficit but it has now become a country with a trade surplus and Vietnam’s goods are available in nearly 130 countries around the world.


Not only foreign investors come to Vietnam but many Vietnamese businesses are also expanding their markets to foreign countries and get success. Vietnam also does well in maintaining national sovereignty, maintaining dialogue through peaceful cooperation and conflict avoidance.


The Deputy Prime Minister also stressed the bilateral relations between Vietnam and the UK. The two countries are developing very well in many areas of politics, diplomacy, economy, culture and education and people diplomacy.


The participation of nearly 100 UK companies, which have invested in or are interested in investing in Vietnam at the Vietnam – UK Business Forum during the official visit of Deputy Prime Minister to the UK is an evidence, which shows that the interest of British businesses in the Vietnamese market is increasing, besides the world famous UK groups already in Vietnam such as Prudential, HSBC and Standard Chartered.


Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh affirmed the policy of the Party and government always considers overseas Vietnamese as an important component of the State of Vietnam, contributing to the socio-economic development of Vietnam.


He desired overseas Vietnamese communities in the UK to continue to unite and help each other in life and business to build a strong community and be able to contribute to the country.


With more than 8,000 students studying in the UK, the Deputy Prime Minister appreciated their determination to learn well to develop the country. This is a promising force to contribute to the high-quality human resources training process for the country.


Mr. Son Thanh, head of the Overseas Vietnamese Association in the UK, desired the government to continue to support the overseas Vietnamese community to develop and maintain national characters.


The representatives of the overseas Vietnamese students expressed their gratitude to the Government of Vietnam for creating favorable conditions for them to have the opportunity to study in the UK and desired to contribute to the construction of the homeland after finishing their study./.
