Paris ceremony honours martyrs

PARIS (VNS)— Buddhist monks and nuns from Vietnamese pagodas in France and other European countries gathered at a recent ceremony in Paris to commemorate martyrs who laid down their lives to protect the nation’s border and islands.


The ceremony, held at in Khuong Viet pagoda, was attended by a crowd of Vietnamese nationals living in France as well as French citizens. The occasion was also a chance for participants to show their gratitude to the fallen martyrs in the homeland.


Monks conveyed the national Buddhism spirit in the ceremony and expressed wishes to join hands in national solidarity and to support the nation’s defence and construction.


Venerable Thich Tinh Quang, who heads the Khuong Viet pagoda, said the ceremony was also a call on the Vietnamese community to foster their unity in protecting and developing their homeland.


Cao Huy Thuan, a retired university professor who presented at the ceremony, said he was deeply touched by the event.


It reminds us of our responsibilities and what we should do for the homeland,” he added. — VNS
