The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) has fined a Vietnam Airlines passenger VND20 million (US$948) for opening an emergency exit while a plane was about to take off.

Tran Van Binh reportedly opened the door after the other passengers had settled into their seats on a flight bound from Hanoi to the Central Highlands town of Pleiku Monday.

The incident occurred just after the pilot started the engine and the aircraft began taxing onto the runway of Noi Bai International Airport.

As soon as flight attendants informed the captain of the incident, the captain turned off the engine.

Binh was escorted out of the plane and handed over to the airport authorities. He admitted to his act.

The flight took off over an hour later.

According to the CAAV, unnecessarily opening an emergency exit is punishable by fines ranging from VND10 to 20 million.

Incidents of attempting to open and opening emergency exit doors are reported quite frequently in Vietnam.
