Ministry of Transport has introduced a draft decree that would require local taxis to be equipped with black boxes and receipt printers, if approved.
According to the ministry, the devices will help local agencies cope with fraudulent taxis and rampant violations, Thoi bao Kinh te Sai Gon (Saigon Times) has reported.
The draft decree called for all taxis to be equipped with black boxes – a device that records a taxi’s whereabouts during a 24 hour period – starting July 1, 2015.
The decree would also mandate that every taxi have a receipt printer by July 1, 2016.
Speaking to the newspaper, representatives from many taxi companies said they feared the costs for installing the recommended devices would be prohibitive.
A Vinasun representative was quoted as saying that the 3G fees required to keep the boxes running in the company’s 5,000 taxis would be devastating at a time when an increase in taxi fares is not economically feasible.
Ho Huy, chairman of Mai Linh Group, agreed, saying that with nearly 11,000 cars, his company would have to spend some VND100 billion (US$4.69 million) to purchase receipt printers alone.
